Hmmm. This seems most odd, unless something is interfering with the registry
entry.
Form Windows Explorer tools > folder options > file types - see what the
default action is for DOC. It should be 'Open'
Click advanced and see if the use DDE box is checked. The DDE line should
read
[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]
If this is not the problem then you need to look for outside influences.
Eliminate orphaned temp files

rename normal.dot to old normal.dot, temporarily eliminate any add-ins -
especially the Works add-in and NortonAV's plug-in for Office, and see if
that fixes it.
