Outline - managing chapters in a book in separate files

I found the outline feature referencing separate documents
which makes managing a book much easier. But within
chapters, I reference other chapters. If I reorder the
chapters, how do I setup the chapter references so that
they automatically update. Example: Text in Chapter 6 says
in "Chapter 2, we introduced" - subsequently, I insert a
new chapter 1 so that chapter 2 becomes chapter 3. I need
the chapter reference to update automatically. This is for
printed material.
