Tool options keep defaulting back

There are 3 obdurate option boxes that I continually lose everytime I check them: 1) the Field Codes box under View; 2) Embed Smart Tags; and 3) Save Smart Tags as XML under Save. Invariably, I have to return to Options to turn these features either OFF, in the case of the first example, or back ON to enable the Smart Tags again. Any suggestions?
