Word 97 Spacing Problem

For some reason, every time I open a new doc in Word 97,
after I type 2-3 lines, if I hit a hard return, the text
goes directly to the bottom of the page. It's similar to
if there was a big text box in the middle and I typed
around it, but there isn't one. This happens every time I
open a new doc. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
