Hi, Amber,
The best-looking alternative is to use the Equation Editor. On the Insert
menu, select Object, and in the dialog select "Microsoft Equation 3.0" from
the list.* Type the V, which should automatically become italic. Then go to
the floating Equation toolbar, click the Ebellishments button (third from
the left in the top row) and click the single-dot button on the dropdown
(left end of the third row). Click outside the equation's bounding box to
return to the document text.
*If "Microsoft Equation 3.0" doesn't appear in the list, you'll have to go
through the Office Setup program to add it to the installation. Also, if
you're using Word 97, it may crash the first time you try to make an
equation; see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/EqEditorCrashes.htm for
the fix.
Another alternative is to create an overstrike field. On the Insert menu,
select Field. In the dialog, select "Equations and Formulas" on the left and
"Eq" on the right. Click the Options button. Select the \O() switch from the
list, type the V and a comma between the parentheses, click Add To Field,
and click OK, OK. In the document, right-click the V and select Toggle Field
Codes. Youl should see this:
{ EQ \O(V,) }
Put the cursor between the comma and the right parenthesis and insert the
Dot Above character from the Symbols dialog. Now select the Dot Above, go to
the Format > Font dialog, click the Character Spacing tab, and change the
Position setting to "Raised" by 3 pt. (This measurement is appropriate for
Times Roman text in font sizes of 10 to 12 points; if you use a different
font or size, you'll need to adjust the number.)
Right-click the code and select Toggle Field Codes again. Make the V italic.
Finally, save the completed field as an AutoText entry so you can simply
insert it wherever you need it.
