In my experience, unless you have a backup somewhere, you can kiss your
story goodbye! Your floppy is now corrupt.
I think there are some retrieval tools that are still around... (not many
people use floppies anymore), maybe someone will suggest one. Even so,
chances are pretty dim.

Floppies can easily get corrupted, this is why, as you have just discovered,
it is a very bad idea to use them as storage. I only use them (rarely) when
transporting stuff, never as storage. Even so, I usually use CD-R... even if
I do not need 600 Mb, they are so cheap and way more reliable than floppies.
In fact, if you buy a computer tomorrow, chances are that there will not
even be a floppy drive on it unless you ask for it.
