Admittedly, OLE is not a "perfect science" in the first place, but - IMHO -
Excel Objects are no more contributory to corruption than any other type of
embedded or linked object. I have also found from personal experience that
the corruption is most frequently caused by the way users mangle their
documents through misuse of the software... an embedded object is simply the
most convenient scapegoat ;-)
I think where most people experience difficulty is that - as with so many
other aspects of 'point-n-click' technology - they have the facility at the
click of a mouse to invoke something of which they [understandably] have
absolutely no understanding or comprehension. Hardware & software developers
have essentially handed the kids a bag of firecrackers, a book of matches
and said "Here, go be productive in the Enterprise - and, BTW - there is a
lot of well-hidden stuff about the do's & don'ts IF you care to search for
it and IF you can understand it when you find it." I don't mean to rant &
I'm not *blaming* the industry, it's just that if you make something so
simple that any fool can do it, then any fool will :-)
Back on subject: If you take the initiative to understand OLE's limits and
are willing to work within them you'll most likely not have many problems.
The best steps are to understand how the programs are designed to be used
and use them according to those guidelines. If you do - especially if the
files aren't subject to the meathook-style of revision often imposed by
other users - you should be fine.

Hello all, I was going to link and embed some Excel spreadsheets into
some of word documents but I have been advised against it because the
files will become easily corrupted. Is this correct? Are there steps
that can be taken to avoid corruption? Chances are, the Excel and Word
files will be kept in seperate folders within a master folder and only
I will have access to them so they are not being moved around. Would
this strategy prevent it? Any suggestions would be most welcome!
Thanks for your time.
