Help with keyboard shortcuts

I use MS Word 2002 on a Windows XP system computer. Over
the last few weeks I have been unable to use the keyboard
shortcuts to format text in open documents - such as CTRL
+ U for underline or CTRL + I for italics etc. The
formatting of the Normal template has also gone
completely haywire - pressing return takes me half way
down the page instead of to the next line etc. The cause
of this problem is my children who have clearly bashed
away on the computer and done something that I cannot now
undo.

Please help as the inability to use the keyboard
shortcuts is driving me to frustration and the lost
normal template means that every blasted new document has
to be reformatted many times to even get it looking close
to the way it should by default!
