Hello Graham,
I used your link to find the file and then renamed it (I think - The file extension was not displayed) then shut down the computer and restarted it but the problem still persists. I can open files from the list on the file menu but that is all. If I try to open a file using the Open tab, it still causes the program to freeze. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. By the way, how does one get Windows Explorer to display the file extensions in Windows Vista Ultimate?
Thanks!
Ed

The default template for Word 2007 is normal.dotm.
You wiill find it as a hidden file in the User Templates folder, the location of which is defined in Word Options > Advanced > File locations.
If you have not redefined that location. copy the following line and paste it into the address bar of the Explorer application:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates
Then press Enter to take you to the default location of the Office templates.

Thanks for the tip on normal.dotx but where can I find the file so
that I can change its name to normal.old as suggested in the
documentation? I have searched unsuccessfully for it. I have had this
problem before but now with Windows Vista, I cannot find the file.
Feeling pretty dumb!

Please Help!
I can open Word files that are in the list on the menu but when I
try to open files using the "Open" tab, I get a short delay then a
message that Word is not responding. Closing the program and
starting over changes nothing. Even shutting down the computer and
restarting it does no good. I have run the Microsoft Office
diagnostics program several times but it finds no problems. I tried
to re-install (by downloading) SP1 for Office 2007 Professional but
it says that it is already installed and closes. I tried to download
two updates for Word and it says that the "Expected Version was Not
Found". What gives? I do not know what to try next. Would like
suggestions. Thanks for the help!
Ed Hawley
