I switched from Word97/Win98SE to WordXP/WinXP almost two years ago.
All of my Word 97 documents were based on either the Normal.dot template
or my own GarfieldStyleGuide.dot template. After I copied both of these
templates from my old Word 97 computer to my new Word XP computer, I had
no reformatting problems attributable to Word XP when opening old
documents, and I had some really long and complex documents. I did have
an occasional difference in pagination that was attributable to the new
Windows XP printer driver. If you know what templates your Word 97
documents are based on, maybe copying those templates over will work for
you too.
