It doesn't for me (Word 2003) ... it just affects the text direction for the arabic character(s), which makes sense, since Arabic is typed right to left.
If you add more Latin (English, Italian...) text, the direction switches to left-to-right again.
If you the select all and set the langhuage to english or any other, it stills says
arabic at the bottom of the screen even if you uncheck the "automatically
spot the language..." (using the italian version, so I'm not sure about the
exact words in the english version) box. Only way to restore is to delete all
those symbols...
If you have support for Arabic (or another right-to-left language) installed, there are buttons on the Formatting toolbar to specify the text direction in the paragraph or in the text run.
If you don't have that support, you can add these buttons to some toolbar... In English, the buttons for the text direction are called LTRRun and RTLRun (and LTRPara resp. RTLPara for the text direction of whole paragraphs).
Or you can switch the text direction per macro:
Select the text, then run
Selection.LTRRun
Does not make much sense to me.
Seems sensible to me.
