Word slow to open but fix makes no sense

Hi,
We had a problem with a user who had an incredibly slow start speed to Word.
I have fixed the issue but am not sure quite why it fixes it.
We are in a citrix environment and she works in a satellite office at the
end of a 2mb fiber connection. Our servers are all centralised at head
office. Previously her Startup folder for was on a network share that the
rest of her department also grab their startup .dots from. They all have slow
opening speeds for word initially. I have moved her startup templates from
this share to her data/app data/ms/word/startup folder and it now whizzes
along but I dont know why this fixes the issue.
Is there a Historic issue with multiple users accessing the same .dot files
causing a slow down?
