In Word 2007, they have made it more difficult to accidentally toggle the HideWhiteSpace feature by making it a double-click action.

Thanks, you solved my problem. I was showing the top area by clicking on
header/footer, then saving the doc to normal. It wasn't saving. Your fix
solved my problem. Meanwhile, I reinstalled Word from scratch, then restored
from a backup. Your fix solved everything in two seconds. Go figure!

slowly over the gap between pages until the pointer changes to opposing
arrows (and if screen tips are enabled you see a pop up 'Show White Space').
Double-click to toggle the feature and your margins will reappear.
