THis error is really quite bizaar, but surprisingly, the printer seemed to be
the issue.
Here is my situation and "work around" resolution:
I am using MS office 2007 with Vista.
about 40-50% of the time, the error occurs when attempting to open word, but
only about 20% of the time w/other office programs (e.g. powerpoint and
excel).
Anotherwords, when the error occurs with Word, it often does NOT occur
w/another Office app, so I CAN usually open an excell file ven when word does
not open...
Further, when I drill down through program files and attempt to open the
winword executable, it still does not come up (although I don't get any
visable errors doing this).
So... after reading through all the posts, I went into control
panel/printers, and changed my default printer from my Brother network
printer to Microsoft XPS Document writer.
After doing that, word opened normally!
I then immediately went back to control panel/printers and changed the
default printer back to my brother network printer.
Word, and other office apps continued to work (open) normally.
and FYI, they were also able to print normally using my brother network
printer.
Later, the intermitent problem again reccoured, and I had to re-trace these
work-around steps, and again, was granted the same intern solution.
The other work-around solution appears to be always leaving the MS office
apps running in the background. Apparently, if they are already running, I
can open additional documents.

Then install a printer driver (the generic text driver from Windows will.

No, "locally installed printer" means that the driver is installed on
your
machine (not on a network). You don't have to have a printer attached to
the
computer. If you are printing to a network printer, you still need to
have
the driver installed on *your* machine.

Hello Terry
I dont have a locally installed printer. I have never had a locally
installed printer. Word has worked fine like this for over a year. By
locally
installed i assume you mean the printer is connected by cable to my pc
not
over the network
The bluetooth addin has also been there over a year. So im thinking it
must
be something else. By any means the bluetooth addin cannot be removed
anyway.
I have removed the pdf addin also but this had not fixed the problem.
About
at the stage where i need to toss a 12month old laptop because it is no
longer useable.
As far as im aware nothing has changed locally on my PC which has
brought
this error to the fore. There were no updates immediately before the
problem
appeared and i had made no system changes
Cheers

I'd definitely remove the Bluetooth add-in. Bluetooth drivers are
notorious
for being badly written and creating havoc with Office apps.
But you list of problems suggests that you do not have a compatible
locally
installed printer driver set as the Windows default. Word MUST have a
compatible locally installed printer driver to work.

This error can appear if a default printer has not been designated
or
if
the
application is unable to locate an existing default printer. To
correct
this
problem, try one of the following in Microsoft Windows:
If a printer is not available in the Print dialog box, add a
printer.
If the application cannot find an existing printer that is already
installed, set the printer as the default printer.
If a default printer is installed but the application is unable to
use
it,
uninstall the printer driver, and then install the latest version of
the
printer driver.
If the printer is on a print server, make sure the printer is
available,
the
network is functioning, the server is not stalled, the printer is
not
out
of
paper, or the printer is not suspended by the administrator.
Printing
issues
associated with a network printer are best handled by your local
network
administrator.
For more information about setting up and troubleshooting printer

The printer i am trying to print to is a network printer. I have
tried
removing it and readding it. It is in my printer control panel,
shows
as
default, and can be printed to from other applications

This sounds more like an arrant add-in is at work. I suggest
removing
all
add-ins and testing to see if that removes the problem. See how to

Ive just started having this problem myself
So far i can confirm its not antivirus, firewall, BCM or firefox
which
is
causing the issue
Its possible it has something to do with printer drivers as i can
no
longer
print from word.
However as background i have had Vista ultimate and office basic
loaded
on
this pc with the same printer for the last 12 months without
issue
The problem for me started with double clicking an outlook
attachment.
Since
then i have no longer been able to double click a word file from
anywhere
in
windows explorer or outlook without getting the error message.
Right
click
and open with word gives me no error message but word opens
without
the
file
opening and then freezes
The only way i can access a file is to open word. then use the
File>open
dialog
I have tried the following steps so far
I have removed the network printer from my pc
Have 'repaired' the word installation
Have removed and reinstalled word
Have deleted the word data registry entry
Have deleted the word addins registry entries
Have tried the winword /r fix
So far no luck. Any other suggestions from anyone lucky enough to
have
fixed
the problem so far

This Vista & Word 2007 problem has been raised by a small number

It remains unclear why only a limited number of users have it.
But
for
those
who do, it is a devastatingly annoying issue - one that renders
Word
2007
almost unusable.
The problem:
When you double-click on any Word doc or docx icon - or attempt
to
open
it
from Outlook email - it opens a blank page in Word 2007 and you
see
the
message "Windows cannot find C:\ (doc) Make sure you typed the
name
correctly, and then try again".
On trying a second time simply double-clicking the same icon
opens
the
document in 90% of cases - though there is occasionally a second
failure
like
the first.
This problem means that every document has to be "opened"
twice - a
huge
waste of time. (though opening a doc / docx from within the Word
program
works fine.)
Note: this also affects Excel 2007 - but I have used this less
so
am
not
so
sure if it is equally.
Before you respond with solutions - please note:
This problem is unresolved ie ...
All the supposed Firefox solutions including registry
alterations
make
no
difference.
Changing or uninstalling Virus programs makes no difference.
It is not just an issue to do with .doc vs .docx
I have uninstalled & reinstalled Office. I have doubled the PC's
memory.
I
have altered every setting I can think of altering (and that is
a
lot).
Nothing makes any difference.
Can anyone help or suggest anything? I strongly suspect a
