Please test Word in Safe Mode. From Start, Run (Winkey+R), type in
winword /a
and press enter. Does Word work OK whilst in safe mode?

I am having the same problem as Bobcville described. I tried the fix you
described below with no success. Here is some of the error message info I
received:
WER97f8.dir00\EXCEL.EXE.mdmp
WER97f8.dir00\appcompat.txt
szModName: hungapp
szAppVer: 11.0.8169.0
Please help.

It's the updates, the wps document is a red herring.
You can remove the offending update from Add/Remove Programs, where it shows
as "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)". Make sure the "show updates"
box at the top is ticked or you won't see hotfixes in the list.
Or wait until Microsoft push out an update.
