Re: headers deleted when updating table in Word 2007

I'd be interesting in taking a look at the document. You can send it to
sbm01004@xxxxxxxxxxx if you want to.

Thanks again for your help. The document must be based on a 2003 Word
document. If you start with a new blank document in Word 2007, then
convert
it to 2003, you will not see the problem. If you use Word 2007 to copy a
Word 2003 document which has headers and an index, updating the index will
delete the headers.

I could not see how to create a new blank Word 2003 document when using
Word
2007. So even saving the document as Word 2003, I would've had to first
start with 2007, and the problem is not seen.

The index is in single column format, similar to a basic table of contents
or table of figures. Each line just has one entry (subject & page nbr).
There are headers on all pages of the document, but none is linked to the
prior one.

What are the exact steps to reproduce the issue? Are you saying that the
document must be *created* in Word 2003? I am using Word 2007 in
compatibility mode, but I'm not seeing anything strange, creating
(simple)
documents with a few index entries.

Also, is the index in column format (as Suzanne asked)?

Thanks for your help. I can reproduce the error in a new document, but
have
now realized that this error only occurs if I start it in Word 2003
mode.

Keeping the file in 2003 mode also has the problem. Saving it as a
Word
2007 docx, then closing & reopening the file, also has the error.
Starting a
new Word 2007 docx, and then converting it to Word 2003 mode, does not
cause
the problem.

Renaming the normal.dotm file has no effect on the error.

There a at least 2 sections in the document, both with headers, none of
which are linked to the previous section. The headers on all sections
get
deleted when this error occurs.

We have numerous documents, created in Word 2003 or below, which need
to
be
maintained in that format.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Another thought that I had was that, since a multi-column index (as
most
are) is in a separate section, if that section has no headers and
footers
and is linked to the previous section, that might somehow cause the
problem?

This is a peculiar error... Can you reproduce it in a new, blank
document
in
Word? If so, what happens if you search for normal.dotm, with Word
closed,
and rename the file? After you've restarted the application, do you
still
see the error in a new blank document?

When I update an index table in a Word 2007, it deletes all headers
in
all
sections of my document. I update the index table by going to
References -->
Index --> Update Index. When I first created the index table, this
did
not
occur. Only when updating the index does the problem occur.

I have been able to recreate this in other Word 2007 documents.
Has
anyone
else seen this occur?

The reason I have an index table is that I am unable to use the
Table
of
Figures option without it appending a number to the end of my entry
in
the
table. For example, "Figure 9: Responsibilities" becomes "Figure
9:
Responsibilities1".
