Hi Jimyuill,
It's not clear how you're relating this issue to being one in Word. The slides in the PDF file were created in Powerpoint.
In Windows XP if I set Firefox, in Firefox' Tools menu to be the default browser and open the first link below in Firefox and use
the hyperlinks there under "More Info" the linked page opens in Firefox. If I make IE the default browser again the linked page
opens in IE.
Office XP/2002 is out of the update cycle.

This appears to be a bug in MS Word 2002:
http hyperlink to pdf doc opens in IE, not default browser
e.g.,
http://www.tml.tkk.fi/Opinnot/T-110.4200/2006/Luennot/12-Standards-Evaluation-6.pdf
http hyperlink to html doc correctly opens in default browser
e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Criteria
I am running XP; firefox is the default browser>>
