I finally decided to call Microsoft-My Case # 1036111162.
It actually took more than 2 hours for them to resolve the issue- (even
though I referred them to RStanford’s Case No. 1036003812 they wanted to go
through all the steps ).
I had to allow them to take over my computer, which was OK since it was much
easier than me doing it per their instructions.
They resolved it by adjusting the 'add ins'

RStanford, I am so nervous about using your solution. I think it will work,
but I am very nervous about messing up the system.

I am trying to get someone with more expereince to do it for me.
I will let you know if it works

Same thing happended to me with Word 2007 running under Vists Home Premium -
new hard disk, new OS, new install of MS Office Professional - no prior
betas, no hardware or software installs since installation of Office. Word
runs fine for a few weeks - then stops working and presents the following
symptoms.

Symptoms:
1) Word opens OK and will open saved documents, but cursor is frozen on
opened documents.
2) Word will allow me to type characters into a new document.
3) Word pop-up announces that it has 'Stopped Working' when I close it -
this happens for both new and old documents - in fact, it happens if I simply
open Word and close it immediately. Then, pop-up announces that Word is
trying to recover information. Then, pop-up announces that Word has 'Stopped
Working'. Sometimes Word restarts; sometimes there is a button to Cancel
Program.
4) Opening Word, clicking on the 'Office button' and selecting 'Word
Options' opens the window, but only 'Popular' tab is available - can't select
others (like 'Resources').
5) After Word crashes 5 or 6 times the 'Diagnosis' app pops up. Running the
Diagnosis app shows no problems with anything
6) Using the original disk to 'Repair' Office - no joy.
7) Uninstalling and re-installing Office - no joy.
8) Running 'broken' Word in Safe Mode seems to allow it to work.

I obtained a solution from MS Support (Case No. 1036003812). The solution
for me was to modify the registry. I'm no computer expert, so if you try
this - do it at your own risk. I'll just let you know what worked for me,
on my machine. I'll assume that you know how to modify the registry.

Go to: CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/Word
Modify Addins -> oldAddins

Go to: CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/12.0/Word
Modify Data -> oldData
Modify Options -> oldOptions

Go to: LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Office/Word
Modify Addins -> oldAddins

Good luck.

PS. The Microsoft Office was purchased separately and installed to the computer

Thanks for responding.
It seems the problem is with Word 2007 and not the computer. I uninstalled
and reinstalled.
I changed my default printer- as per instructions I found under a Microsoft
Beta board.
The problem still exists. I am afraid to take the computer back, as I will
lose my E-mails in Outlook. The last time I backed up Outlook, only the
folders and sub-folders were saved. I lost all the actual E-mails.

If this is a new Laptop with new OEM software, then the seller is fully
responsible for support. I presume it is under warranty? If you are unable
to resolve the problem, then take it back for a refund.

Meanwhile, what have you tried to resolve the problem?

My Word ( 2007) will not work. Each time I try to open a Word document, or
start a new document, I get the error message "Microsoft Office Word Has
Stopped Working".
very frustrating, as I am a writer- that's how I make my living. Because I
can't write, I lost a very good contract- because I missed an important
deadline.

I just paid all this money for Office Small Business and a new Lap-top
with
Windows Vista. What a mistake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any tips...
