Follow everything in the FAQ as some of the opening errors may also be responsible for closing errors. Typically, I expect that you have a third party add-in that is replacing Word's Close command but is incompatible with your version. Follow the FAQ and it should find the problem.

Are you saying that I should try some of the debugging procedures on that
page for problems with opening Word? Or that there are procedures on that
page for problems with closing Word, too?

I don't see anything on that page that specifically addresses the exact
problem I am having, both in opening and closing Word.

Please let mem know.
