Re: file permission error

I would still recommend NEVER to save directly to (or open and edit from) any removable media. It is the cause of many lost or corrupt documents. Save to your local HDD, then use either File, Open or File Save, select the file, right-click and chose Send To... to copy the file to the media. The problem isn't so much a bug with Word but it is the way that Word works when saving. Word always requires a temporary file in the active folder and when you execute a save, Word goes through a quite complex procedure that involves rewriting the temp file several times before it completes creating the final ..doc file. Removable media is usually many times slower than a local HDD and frequently not as reliable.

garfield...,

I have been using MS Office as my primary productivity s/w since '97, and I
am astounded at this "news"! It has just recently become a regular problem in
Word XP, particularly when I am using a new 6GB pocket HD. I am a clergyman
and my wife is a university professor, and I can't tell you the number of
times we have both opened from and saved to removable media without a hitch.
Nevertheless, there have also been innumerable random losses of files that we
could not explain. I regard this as one of the best-kept dirty little secrets
about MS Office!
I am now trying Office 2007 Beta on one of my computers. Can you shed any
light on the potential for the same problem under the new program?
Thanks--yours is the most succinct answer to this problem on this board!

You should not open files directly from a floppy disk or other removable
media in Office applications, because doing so usually results in file
corruption sooner or later. Copy the files to your hard drive, remove the
read-only attribute as necessary in File->Properties, modify and save the
file to the hard drive, close the file, and then use Windows Explorer or My
Computer or your CD mastering software to copy the file to the removable
media.

File corruption can occur when there is not enough space on the removable
media for the Office application to create the necessary temporary files, and
there is no way of knowing how much space the temporary files will use. See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 "Description of how Word creates
temporary files" for more information.
