Re: Word freezes, then crashes

If this is a document corruption, then saving as HTM does usually remove the corruption. But it isn't a 100% fix. As the Webrider suggests, the ultimate is to make it all plain text (I usually use Notepad for this) and then insert the text file into a new blank document. Of course, this removes all formatting including tables (the Table to Text and Text to Table tools are useful this).

Hello Webrider,

Thanks for your detailed tips. I'll follow through with them and post back
about the results just as soon as there something new and relevant to say.

I was hoping that the re-save as an '.htm' file might do the job (the page
describing the fix seems very upbeat about this solution), and thanks for
clarifying that it doesn't always work.

This brings up an issue. I will go through the steps you've indicated, and
hopefully it will make a difference, but this will only work for new
documents. Some of my problematic files are over 100,000 words long -- and it
will be unimagineable for me to re-type them from scratch! Surely there must
also be a fix for precious, existing files...

Following the advice on the help pages here, I have always kept the
'auto-update' function in the styles dialogue unchecked, so, in the present
case, the freeze/crash can't be due to that.

Also, the laptop is fairly new and has never given even the slightest sign
of trouble, so a hardware mafunction seems unlikely.

If I were in your position I would determine if the application is at fault
or the documents are at fault. I think the following procedure will determine
which:

1. Find and rename your normal.dot file. This forces the application to
create a new default normal.dot file. You can later rename your original to
get it back.

2. Reboot and open Word NEW FILE and use the normal.dot default template.

3. Type raw text, do NOT copy from another source. Duplicate the text and
pages of text to get a larger file.

4. Scroll through pages, print preview several times in a row, change views
several times, then print preview several more times.

5. If this results in a stable product, then your problem is definately
document file corruption. If it is not stable, then it is application or
computer system instability. You have already reloaded Word so it will
probably be a computer problem.

Hope this helps. By the way, I tried that save as HTML and resaved the html
back to word doc, and the problem still remained. I also searched for
viruses, and even installed SP3 with no change.

I have no proof but I truely believe that my corrupted files were a direct
result of having "auto update" boxes checked in my styles while I modified
some styles. I have never had a problem since I unchecked those boxes,
imported raw text data and rebuilt from there. Many MVPs warn against these
"auto update" styles check boxes, and I am sure that these warnings are a
direct result of bad experiences.
