See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. Ignore the
word "Opening" in the title, since the troubleshooting steps are applicable
to all sorts of problems.
Since Safe Mode stops the problem, the cause is probably either an add-in or
a registry problem. For the former, you should also read
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx.

I am using Word 97 under XP.
When I try to sort a list, I get an error box that says "Microsoft
Word for Windows® 97 application file has encountered a problem and
needs to close" and "Please tell Microsoft about this problem." The
module associated with this error is winword.exe.
The error does not happen in Safe Mode.
Does anyone know of a solution besides checking for conflicts by
shutting off applications that start with XP? I've tried that.
Thanks,
