You are never charged for a hotfix that you need.

The problem is described in KB912022. Microsoft has a hotfix for the
problem
but has not released it yet. Microsoft offers the Hotfixe on a no-charge
basis but the only way to get it is to pay U$35.00 to a Microsoft Support
Professional on a Pay-Per-Incident basis to resolve this issue. You may
contact them at: (800)-936-5700, Monday to Friday, 5:00 A.M. - 9:00 P.M.
Pacific Time and Saturday to Sunday, 6:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M. Pacific Time.

You just have to deal with or pay the U$35.00 as Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 912022 states that there is a "post-Microsoft Office 2003 Service
Pack 2 hotfix". The supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but
it
is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not
severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next
Microsoft Office 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix."

It happens with all pictures and all documents. When I select Insert
picture,
from file, the explore box opens. As soon as I select a picture or
attempt
to
select a folder, it freezes or Word just closes.

"Herb Tyson [MVP]" wrote:

Before reinstalling, I'd try Detect and Repair.

And, before that, I'd try starting Word in Safe Mode. Hold down Ctrl
when
you start Word, and keep it pressed until the Safe Mode prompt
appears --
say Yes. Then see if the problem still exists.

Does it happen for ALL pictures, or just that one? For all documents
in
which you try to insert the picture, or just a single document?

Thanks Herb. I tried recreating the normal.dot and the registry
entry
for
Word. Neither worked. I then went to the NVIDIA support site and
installed
the latest driver for the Geoforce display card. Still no luck. My
next
step
is to uninstall and reinstall Word. If you have any other thoughts,
I'd
love
to hear them. Thanks again for the response.

"Herb Tyson [MVP]" wrote:

Such errors often are caused by registry corruption or template
corruption
(usually normal.dot, but sometimes others). It can also be caused
by a
faulty display driver, believe it or not.

When I try to insert a picture (and sometimes an object) Word
either
closes
with no warning or displays the message that Word has
encountered a
problem
and needs to close. I'm running Windows XP and Office XP and
both
are
up
to
date with all upgrades or Service Packs.
