Why does Word 2003 change the Automatic Number formatting?

I created a document in which there is a numbered list, of which I have
purposely formatted without the use of Automatic Numbers. When I opened the
document after I had saved the revisions/updates, Word then changed my
formatting and inserted an "automatic number" on the last number of a list in
the document. Why does Word 2003 do this? I do not want Automatic Numbering
in my document as it doesn't import properly into another program we are
using. What can I do? Is this a bug in Word?
