I had a similar problem the other day, described in the printingfonts
group.
In my case it was possible to unscrunch things by using File | Print
to switch to a different printer and print the document, then switch
back. (It doesn't matter whether the printer has paper, or even
exists, it just has to have a driver and you need to actually print
the document as far as Word is concerned.)
