I'm not familiar with Sony Laptops, but in HP and IBM laptops, the touchpads
have settings from the Control Panel. One of the settings is a click-lock
that has the affect of locking the left mouse button under certain
conditions - such as when you want to hold down the left mouse button to
drag an object. It sounds to me as though this setting is being
spasmodically triggered.
