Word needs to see a printer driver: I am guessing that it cannot see a
driver when it needs it. Try installing your network printer as a local
printer and test again.
As an aside, after all those hangs, you may need to clean up the abandoned
temp files: see the following FAQ for some help with this

: Hi,
:
: I have Word 2003 running with all updates on an XP
: Professional laptop and plenty of free memory. However,
: Word will completely hang the machine stand alone of
: hooked into our network. Control - Alt delete does
: nothing as it is completely frozen. I have repaired the
: installation as well as removed and reinstalled Office. I
: even went so far as to take my Normal.dot from my home PC
: to work (also 2003) but it did not solve the problem.
: This happens with both large and small files at work but
: never at home so I think that the documents are sound.
: Some days it doesn't happen and then there are days when
: it will happen about 8 times a day.
:
: Any ideas out there? I have also checked with SystemWorks
: 2005 as well as several other utilities but all say the
: PC is fine.
:
: Thanks
