For the file opening problem, disable the Office Plugin that comes with
Symantec/Norton AntiVirus. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820
"How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in"
for more info.

For the printing problem, make sure you have installed the Windows XP
printer driver for your printer (not an older OEM printer driver that
came with your printer). You might want to check on your printer
manufacturer's website for an updated printer driver for your printer.
Windows XP generally requires a different printer drivers for a given
printer than older versions of Windows. If your printer is more than a
few years old and no longer supported by the manufacturer (like my
circa-1995 Okidata Okipage 6e laser printer), you might have to install
a driver for a different printer that your printer can emulate (in my
case, a HP LaserJet II).
