writing on a line

Is this the correct group to ask this? I have a document saved with blank
lines drawn for things that change from month to month. When I try to go
back and type on top of the line, the underlining disappears as I type.
What do I need to do to leave the line as it is when I add words? Same
thing in WordPerfect.
