Error messages after reinstall following 'AOL induced crash'

Hi

I recently had to reinstall MS Office 2000 professional
(due to a major system crash whilst unhooking myself from
the claws of AOL). Whilst I followed the installation
instructions to the letter - and no error messages
appeared during installation - since then everytime I open
a package (word / powerpoint/excel) two things happen:

1) The package appears to have to try and configure itself
everytime
2) A message saying 'office assistant could not start - do
you want to reinstall' appears. The first time this
appeared I followed the step by step instructions
on 'detect and repair' again with no error meesages
appearing, however after a reboot the same things happen
again.

In additon, since the reinstall I have been unable
to 'double-click' files open from within folders -
although they will open fine from within the package
(after the annoying 2 step error process above). I tried a
suggested re-register word using 'winword /r' however I
get the following error message:

"Cannot find the file winword (or one of its components)"

although when I search for winword it is definitely there.

Whilst not stopping me working - it is very frustrating.
Can you help?
Thanks
Allen
