What happens if you do as indicated, run Setup and select "Repair" to restore this application?

It could be some corruption in the Registry and Word is simply recreating the key each time you start Word. However if you modify your preferences then they will not be saved.

Of course I'm not sure this is the problem, since there isn’t much information to go on, but this would be a scenario where there is a problem but it isn't immediately visible.
