Word 2002 opening and closing slowly

Been having a minor problem since last year with Word
2002 opening and closing slower than it originally did.
When I first started using Word 2002, open and close were
pretty much instantaneous, but now it can take up to half
a minute for either action.

When I first open, it looks like it's acting normally,
with opening a clean document to begin work, then it
seems like it's overlaying a second application on top of
it (it creates an extra thin border around the document
and the look of the program seems enhanced). I'm unable
to do any function with it until it has completed this.
On closing, it is saving Normal.dot. I never get any
error messages as a result of this delay. I have no
macros loaded, and only a few scattered additions to
autotext and the custom dictionary.

I upgraded Word 2002 from the Microsoft site, but I would
have thought that any upgrade would be seamless and have
no impact on loading time. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the program without change in this delay. I
am running under Windows XP (regularly upgraded and
system is regularly defragged) and all other applications
open and close normally, with no slow down. AV software
and spyware software are also upgraded regularly.

My Word 97 running under Windows 95 on an 8 year old
system opens and closes faster. What's wrong with this
picture?
