Hi Collin,
My first suggestion/question is if Word came installed as part of Works Suite. If so then the soft Works Suite Add-in exhibits the same behavior you describe.
Go to your Control Panel and in Add/Remove Programs uninstall the "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word".
