Request virus check on too much?

Word XP w/ Windows XP HE starts with a "virus request". I
have elected low security in "Macro" area to turn off,
Does the virus checker have to send a request every time
I load the program? It takes forever to load and exit. I
thought that Norton does that for me.
How can I turn it off and speed up loading and exit.
