Thanks for the reply Valter. Sadly, in the corporate environment anti-
virus software is non-negotiable and is pushed down by group
policies. As you mention, it's likely to be causing some impact, but
removing it is not an option at the moment. I am aware of the ways to
do smaller incremental builds to avoid the sysgen step, but thanks for
the recap -- I was hoping to focus specifically on how better hardware
would affect my build times.
Your data point on your laptop is somewhat surprising to me - to get
similar build times on desktop machine we've had to get significantly
improved hardware. Looking at specs for that machine, it appears to
only have a 5200 rpm drive. Perhaps this is proof that your dual-core
CPU is improving your build times and it re-enforcing the belief that
hard drive speed isn't as important. It also appears the maximum
memory configuration for that laptop is 4 GB - can you post your specs
specifically related to CPU/drive speed/RAM?
