Re: VIA Atapi

Hi,
Just tried the MS atapi driver.
It mounts my disk much faster !
Thanks for the suggestion.

Is there any reason why I would prefer the VIA atapi ?
Does it support something that MS doesn't ?

Greetings,
Rob.

Hello Rob,

Certainly I can't speak for VIA, but can only share our company experience
with VIA boards. You are given some drivers off-the-shelf by VIA for free
( as a part of VIA BSP typically) and they work. No source code for those ?
That wasn't expected for a proprietary but free BSP.

Yes it takes some time on some boot media. In fact some disk-on-modules even
can hang on boot on VIA boards. That's because VIA ATAPI doesn't support
well any IDE disk device in the world.

You can try to build an image based on CEPC BSP rather than VIA BSP and then
add or replace one driver at a time. Perhaps you may wish to keep Microsoft
ATAPI and not use VIA ATAPI driver.

Regarding VIA BIOS - as far I know you can't turn it off entirely. Maybe you
can replace it with your own BIOS which will do nothing ?

Feel free to contact VIA directly. We gave up on that a while ago - small
company needs seem to be of no interest to VIA probably due to low enough
revenue.

Best regards

Hi,
I have an IDE flashdisk, in a VIA EPIA board.
The driver is VIAATAPI.
I switched off all other disks, so only 1 disk-device is mounted.
Why does it take almost 5 sec for DSK1: to appear ?
I think this should be a matter of a few ms..... (ok, maybe 100ms ?)
How can I speed this up, without the driver-sourcecode ?

Also the VIA EPIA bios takes about 9 sec to start.
I just need it to start the bootloader, or do I need more
bios-functionality ?
what is it doing during these 9 sec ?
I already switched off all functions I donot need.
Does or Can via provide a bios that initializes nothing (or almost
nothing).

Greetings,
Rob.
