Do you have a dual core/hyperthreading CPU?
I switched to a Core 2 Duo recently, running RAID 1 and got a couple of hangs like this, I added SYNCHRONIZE_DRAIN=1 to all of my sources files and it went away. This may have been the RAID doing it, or the faster CPU.
SYNCHRONIZE_DRAIN shouldn't particularly fix this problem, but I suspect it made a subtle timing difference that caused it to go away, or maybe it prevented the tools attempting to open the same file simultaneously or maybe my threatening to throw the PC out of the window did it.
Note that on my system the problem appeared occasionally, maybe 1 out of 5 sysgens, I have not seen it since tho'.
