I think the biggest problem you're going to have is software stacks.
Platform Builder doesn't come with app support for phones, you'd need to
acquire (or write) your own. I don't know if you'd be able to get
Smartphone from MS to use in an academic environment, but I highly doubt it.
If you're looking to develop the software expertise, I guess writing this
stuff is what you want anyway.
As far as hardware goes, it depends on your module interface. This could be
some custom connector, or it could be a standard UART or USB etc.
