Another alternative is to use UPNP and the HOSTNAME sample UPnP device. It
will use DHCP if available - if not it will use AutoIP to find an available
IP address. Once it has one it announces itself as a UPnP device that you
can find and assign a hostname to. You can then extend it to allow
specifying a static IP or any other settings you may desire. It has the best
of all worlds and runs on headless devices.
