The IRC channel would not serve as a replacement for the newsgroup, but
would rather be a place where developers could communicate in real time.
Additionally the IRC channel could benefit the newsgroup by providing
answers to questions which are more trivial, leaving more difficult
questions to the larger audience of the newsgroup.
The bottom line is that there are situations where IRC could be very
beneficial to people in the community. If you do not believe you are one
of these people, then you obviously do not need to participate.
I've found IRC to be an invaluable resource. I urge you to try it out
some time. If you have tried it and don't care for it, I respect your
informed opinion.
