The SDCard.org specification requires that SD devices (cards, I/O devices,
whatever) support the native SD hardware protocol as well as a simpler SPI
hardware protocol. The idea is you could support SD cards in low end
microcontroller systems which usually have a SPI interface. The
http://sdcard.org site used to have a pdf you could download that detailed
the hardware interfaces, but I don't see it now. SDCard.org does not make
it easy to support their standard :(.
