How do I stop stuff from being on the desktop?

I've got a bunch of icons that appear on my desktop at bootup, and I would
like to trim down the list, but I can't find the registry entries that
affect them. Searching for "Desktop" I only found the first two (My
Computer and Recycle Bin) in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Explorer\Desktop]. In
addition to those I have: desktop.ini, and shortcuts to My Documents,
Internet Explorer, Media Player, WordPad, PDF Viewer, and Image Viewer on my
desktop.
