Re: Windows CE C6G License and Screen Size

Even so...

It would have been nice to have had the XAML UI available in the Core like
they do with GDI. Espcially considering with the Open Screen Project, flash
will likely be free and with Qt being free there are number of contenders.

I have always tried to support and use all Microsoft products but at an
additional licensing premium of $10 on top of the $3 for core, it sure adds
up just for a UI technology (considering that is all I want). It just takes
5000 units and an additional $50000 has been spent. Alot can be done with
that money.

Clint

They don't have an all or nothing approach, or I wouldn't call it that. If
you are using premium features, you pay for the premium license, certainly.
How would you like it priced? A La Carte? Do you know how many different
pieces there are? That would be truly unworkable. The cost delta from core
to professional just isn't enough to slow most people down. Say that it's
$15/unit; it wouldn't take too many hours of your time replacing features
yourself to pay for that.

You'd need codecs for whatever media format you are using. I guess that you
don't need the media player application if you don't want it, but it seems
like a complete waste of your time to write all of these tools. Use what's
available in the OS and save your time for your unique features.

Sorry, but I don't know the answer to the specific Silverlight question.

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for your response. Board developer got back to us with more
information from their Windows CE distributor that the restriction was
with
the X86 version of Windows CE (which I suppose makes more sense due to
Windows Embedded Standard being availble).

As for the premium features it is unfortunate that they have an all or
nothing aproach for the features. I don't mind paying the Silverlight
component but it just seems silly that I also have to pay for the features
that I will never use. For example I could see them charging $2-3 for
silverlight if that was all you needed. Obviously at some point pricing
bundles would make sense up to what Pro costs. Anyways, obviously this
isn't
how it is done but if the powers that be read this forum, perhaps they
will
consider it.

One thing that may make it more worthwhile is the Windows Media Player.
We
have the requirement of playing video with audio in our application and I
don't know if it is enough to just have DirectShow or is some kind of
player
also required that knows how to bring together container formats, audio
codecs and video codecs?

Also, the intention is to use the video within the Silverlight chrome.
Does
anyone know if there any technical problems with this requirement?

Cheers,
Clint

Who told you that the license is restricted to 7" displays? I am not
aware
of any hardware restrictions in the licensing.

Why isn't Silverlight available in Core or Core Plus? Well, becuase it
is a
premium feature so Microsoft is charging extra for it. If it isn't worth
paying extra for, don't use it. Simple enough isn't it?

The real answers to your questions will come from having a discussion
with
your distributor, not from these newsgroups.

Hi,

We are developing a Windows CE based device with an OMAP3530 and a 10"
display. I have been told that the C6G version (with Silverlight
support)
is
restricted to less than 7" display systems. Is this arbitrary and
ridiculous
licensing restriction true? Wouldn't it make sense that someone with a
larger display would wan't access to the better UX technologies?

Also why isn't something like the Silverlight UX available to Core or
Core
Plus? We don't want a web browser, we don't want office, pdf etc.

All we need is the features of core plus Silverlight UX and Gesture
support!
Is that too much to ask? Please tell me there is someway to purchase
that
scenario a-la-carte.

Cheers,
Clint
