Yes indeed.

I guess this is a question for the XP-firewall people. I thought I had
done
something to mess things up a few months ago, but obviously something
changed
in the XP firewall

But you say yours works.
Have you run "windows update" on your xp box lately?

CE can access the XP box with no firewall and can access w2003s and vista
with their firewall, so the problem is pretty isolated to xp-firewall now
prevents CE from

yep,

my xp box has a "group policy " for file and printer sharing.

it "excepts" tcp ports 139, 445 and udp ports 137, 138

but my vista box firewall wont display the ports associated with "file
and
printer sharing"

There's a setting in the firewall to allow file sharing. That's all
that
comes to mind.

By Golly your a genius!!!

Keep it up I'll owe you a beer too!!!!!

Now this is where it gets interesting:

What I did was disable the firewall on the xp machine.

HONEST I haven't touch this setting in over a year!!!! ( Ok I'm a
fossil )

So I'm thinking one of those annoying autobot updates that reboots
my
machine in the middle of doing things ( ok I exagerate just a
little )
must
have added something to the firewall. Any guess as to what
"exception"
I
have to enable to allow my CE device to see the XP files?

I'm using two different XP machines for my testing. Both work with
both
CE4.2 and 5.0. Perhaps you don't have the NetBEUI protocol
installed
on
your XP box, but you do on Vista? In any case, if you have a
single
Vista
machine and a single XP machine and one works and the other does
not,
I'd
cross-compare the list of clients and protocols installed for their
network
adapters. Something is missing...

By Golly you are right.

I don't need the "\network" anymore.

At least to my vista machines :(

XP still not so happy.
