Re: Basic question on Windows Embedded

Hello all!

Krickster, I downloaded the plug in, but I never installed it. And I do
have VS 2008. Always a little nervous of installing plugs that I have no
clue of really what it is. The links that DarkKnight gave were very helpful.
I'm still not sure how to proceed. At this point, I guess I still have alot
of research to do, and see if where it takes me. This is my backup plan, if
my first stabe at this solution fails. So at this point it's not a must, but
I always want to have a back up, just in case.

As always, I know more about the subject now, than when I started this post.
Thanks to all for the great information and insight!

Platform Builder is a very complex plug-in, as Visual Studio plug-ins go,
and plug-in interfaces are always pretty version-specific. No doubt, when
the next version of Platform Builder comes out, it, too will target the
latest Visual Studio version (whatever that is), just as PB 6.0 did at the
time it was released. That is PB6 came out well before VS2008...

I guess I did state that too simply. There are many other factors that
went into the decision. However, the fact that Microsoft releases the
latest
version that still requires developers to take a step backwards is a
little
disconcerting. Some may say that running VS2005 on the same machine as
VS2008 is no biggy, but there are also many cases and forums on the web
troubleshotting issues due to just that situation. I don't want to be
spending days trying to fisure out if something is broke due to my error,
just to discover it to be some obscure hickup from having both together.
Yes, I understand that we can also run it on another machine, but I refuse
to
let MS off the hook on this one (as I am forced to in sooooo many other
scenarios).

As I said, I was just curious how he managed to get the plugin in VS2008
or
if he meant to say VS2005. I guess you could say I was hopeful there was
a
workaround to the VS2005 requirement.

Huh? You want to switch from Windows CE to a more expensive OS simply
becuase PB 6.0 is a plug in for VS2005? Even if you had to purchase
VS2005,
which you don't, I don't get it.

Rudy,

I'm almost in the same boat as you, sorry I can't be of much help.
However,
something you wrote grabbed my attention. You said that the download
installed the plugin for VS2008 ? My main concern (and the reason
why I
am
now looking at Vista for Embedded "Windows Embedded Enterprise") was
that
the
PB 6.0 plugin doesn't appear to work with VS2008, only VS2005. I'm
curious
how you managed this.

Thanks,
Ken

Hello All!
I never worked with Windows Embedded before. So I have some basic
questions. First of all, is embedded just another OS on the windows
platfrom,
that is stripped down? I have a simple program, that I would like to
run
on
bare computer. Basicly and VGA, network jack, and a little memory.
All
this
computer will do is take a command from a server to connect it's IP
device to
another device. I need this computer to run 24/7 all the time without
much
trouble.

Linux was brought into this scenario, for it's reliablitly. I'm
hoping
windows Embedded would be a nice alternative.

So I was going to download, excepecting to download an OS. But it
seemed
to
be a plug in for my VS 2008 program. So now I'm wondering, do I have
to
develop this within that plugin for VS, and then is the OS built
within
my
program I create? So when I install my program, it installs the OS
automatcilly?

I guess I don't understand how this all works, if someone can give me
shove
in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Rudy
