Hi Lonifasiko,
to 1)
if you don't have Windows CE Platform Builder installed on your machine it
is best to use something like a PocketPC that already runs Windows CE. If you
do want to install Windows CE Platform Builder (see anwer 2)) you can use a
CEPC which is an old desktop PC that can be easiely converted to a CEPC
(instrunction can be found in Platform Builder help or MSDN) or you can use
the emulator that comes with Windows CE Platform Builder. Best would be an
evaluation Board that is colsest to your real hardware or your real hardware.
to 2)
to build you own Windows CE image you do need Platform Builder. If you want
to work with Windows CE 5.0 (or earlier) Platform Builder is a standalone
applications. You can use the evaluation version to start with, it is
basically a full version but can not sell anything you produced with the
evaluation version. If you want to work with Windows Embedded CE 6.0,
Platform Builder is a plugin for Visual Studio 2005 here you can also use the
evaluation version which comes with an evaluation version of VS2005 and has
the same restriction as the evaluation version of Platform Builder for
Windows CE 5.0. There are tutorials how to build images in the Platform
Builder help or MSDN.
to 3)
with Windows CE 5.0 you can use eMbedded Visual C (free tool for native code
development), VS2003 (with free add on for mobile devices and Compact
Framework components in your Windows CE image) or VS2005. With Windows
Embedded CE 6.0 use VS2005. If you want to use .NET Compact Framework it
needs to be supported on your device.
to 4)
if you only want to develop applications for Windows CE devices and not the
Windows CE images (BSPs) then you don't need Platform Builder at all, you
only need the SDK for the specific device which you can get from the OEM or
use the standart SDK which you can get for free at the Microsoft webpage.
best regards

Hi,.
New to the group, that means newbie question to start ;-)
1) I wanted to start playing and developing applications for devices
running Windows CE. I've got quite much experience developing desktop
applications using .NET Framework, and also for Windows Mobile powered
devices running .NET Compact Framework.
Then, I needed information regarding not very expensive but complete
devices or "starter kits" running Windows CE. Would simply need a
solid platform as a good starting point for introducing the world of
Windows CE. Could somebody suggest me any good and affordable
platform? I've heard something about eBox platform....
2) What about the process of deploying Windows CE images from Visual
Studio down to the device? Where could I obtain a good and complete
guide to see how this mechanism works? Does this process include the
use of the "famous" Platform Builder?
3) Regarding development, I understand once I've got a device running
a Windows CE image, I can develop applications using .NET Compact
Framework for example......
4) Lisence issues. How much does a Windows CE lisence cost? In many
sites I've seen they offer "180 days fully functional trial" of
Platform Builder. And then? Which would be the cost? Do I need to buy
Platform Builder?
As you can see, newbie general questions, sure you can help me ;-)
Thanks very much in advance.
