Problem with WinCE 5.0 and large IDE drives

Is there a known problem with WinCE 5.0 and (relatively) large IDE drives?
On an x86 system, I have 2 sizes of Fujitsu laptop IDE drives: one is 20 GB
and the other is 40 GB (neither are the boot device only data storage). The
20 GB drive works just fine. The 40 GB drive never works properly no matter
how I partition and format the drive. I can inspect, partition, and format
the drive under DOS using FDISK & Format, and Windows XP, using XP Disk
Manager and Partition Magic8. I have created very small, FAT16 and FAT32,
partitions of 8MB to 2 GB, to the upper Windows limit for FAT32 of 32 GB.
WinCE never logs the drive. If I use WinCE Storage Manager to partition and
format the drive, it appears to work and I can mount the partion; but if I
power cycle the device, it never recognizes the drive and partition on
reboot. If I look at the drive that has been partitioned using WinCE under
Partition Magic, I got me some interesting error warnings saying that it
appeared that the partitions created were using a different drive geometry
from what the drive actually was. Is this a known problem with WinCE not
reading the physical structure of large IDE drives correctly? Is there a
known fix? I looked through all the QFE's since February of this year and
did not see anything.
Any help will be appreciated,
-John
