For some reason, Windows Media Player, incuded in the WinCE 5.0 release I'm
using, only displays "garbage" while playing video content of any sort. Since
I'm quite a newbie in WinCE, it's yet impossible for me if it's a Windows
Media Player specific problem, or a problem related to e.g.
DirectDraw/DirectShow and video-driver combinations. It seems like screen
updates aren't handled correctly, resulting in a mess, only getting slightly
better in "motionless" scenes after a keyframe update.
I've tried several configurations, all leading to the same result:
- A plain "set-top-box" build, without any modifications, running in the
"Emulator". I've tried this on 3 different systems, all resulting in the same
garbage beeing displayed.
- An Intel 845GV based SBC with builtin Extreme Graphics. Running a basic
"set-top-box" build with some driver additions (video, audio, network). I've
used the video-drivers for CE 4.2. Those seem to work perfectly, except for
the video part. I've also tried several VESA modes (with and without the
Intel drivers installed), to make sure my "old" video-drivers aren't to
blame. (I've also tried display drivers for the 830m chipset, but it didn't
work out at all.)
I stumbled across some update:

SYMPTOMS
When you play a video file by using Microsoft Windows Media Player on a
Microsoft Windows CE 5.0-based device, you may notice a jitter in the video
when you expect the video to be smooth.
Unfortunately, after applying the update and clearing and rebuilding the
whole build, the problems remain.
Since I see this problems in both the emulated version and the final build,
I think it's not directly my fault and somebody should have stumbled across
it and maybe even knows a fix for it.
PS: I know that I cannot expect great performance from an emulator, playing
WMV's, but it should at least produce some viewable results. Also, the
content I've tried ranged from "tiny" to "huge", both with the same undesired
results on all platforms.
