Re: Snmp

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Your advisor would be a better source of "would it be good" or not. It
would be significant effort, if you had to code that yourself. Figure
several months of coding and testing.

Paul, as i don't have enough time to make a software, it wouldn't be a
good idea doing a framework to other programmers. I'm thinking of
making a Pocket software that can control, through Wi-Fi, any other PC
which has a SNMP Agent. Would it be a good task to my monography?

There is no standard meaning for "Client SNMP", as far as I know. An
agent
is the component that runs on a managed device. It receives requests from
an SNMP manager, processes them and returns a result.

So, you have a MIB that is supported on some non-Pocket PC device and you
are thinking about moving it over to work on the Pocket PC? Or you are
thinking about creating a library that will make it easier for people who
want to make SNMP agents for thier Pocket PC devices?

I'll try to answer your last question without really understanding what
you're talking about. Since SNMP is a *standard protocol*, there are
many,
many libraries around which handle it, whether from the manager end of the
communications or the agent end. There are also commercial libraries
which
support SNMP, although I'm not aware of any which support *only* SNMP.
IP*Tools, the one that I mentioned before supports SNMP and probably a
dozen
other protocols. It's not clear to me what the existence of a free
library
to do something with SNMP would have to do with you. There are free
operating systems in the world, too. Are you running one on your desktop
PC? Probably not. The fact that there is a free competitor might make
the
for-pay competitor work harder, but it doesn't put them out of business,
necessarily.

Paul, i'm sorry about my bad english. I was trying to tell you that i
was making a research about conversion from SNMP to Pocket last week.
My question is: would it be better to make an Agent SNMP or a Client
SNMP? I have three months to do it. Is there any free software that
could make it? If there is, all my research would be lost.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're asking about. There may
be
a
word or two or a whole phrase that didn't translate well into English
but
the overall meaning has been lost.

Thank you Paul, These days stows also searching in mounting a customer
SNMP. Pocket PC could thus control a server through one. You find which
of the two more interesting solutions? The ideal would be to make the
two but I do not go to have time. I go to have 3 months to develop
this. Exists nowadays programs free that already they make this?
Because it will be had my work would not have felt

If the device has SNMP built into it, the documentation of the
operating
system itself (what comes with the Windows CE 5.0 with Platform
Builder
Evaluation download), gives you enough information and a single
example
of
an SNMP Extension Agent that isn't very good. You can get something
working
based on it; I have several devices with custom MIBs supported. I
don't
recommend this as a project unless you have 1-2 months to devote to
it,
however.

If the device does *not* have SNMP support built into it, you can use
something like IP*Works for building an agent. They have examples of
how
to
use their code. www.nsoftware.com
