It's still a pretty broad question. Software can be everything from FPGAs
and firmware to the OS and kernel to drivers to apllications that run on
already complete systems. What area are you interested in pursuing?

Hello, I am an engineering student who is taking a break from school to
get
some more real world experience. I am becoming very interested in getting
into embedded development, with emphasis on software. However, since I
was
an electrical engineering student, my program only included introduction
to
programming and data structures as programming courses. I would like to
start something related to embedded systems as a SMALL business venture
that
I could explore. This would also allow me to gain experience in the
field.
I see the topics on this board, and I am VERY interested, but I am
uncertain
as to what I should do in order to get started in the field given that
there
is no one hiring in my region for embedded, and I cannot move to get
experience because of another business I already have. Are there any
books
or tutorials that would be good for introducing embedded systems? Any
tips
for getting started?
.
